Bible Study Book Club - Session 3 -
Ruth and Samuels
November readings / questions to respond to and discuss online before the in person meeting on November 23th, 6pm at Fairview or on twitter @FvCCGladstone
Because I am a week behind getting these questions out, and some have already started reading, please read at your own pace. I will list three sections to respond to. Don't forget blog posts available on the church website to respond to as well.
- Section 1 - Book of Ruth
• The story of Ruth is a short one that gives many examples of character and challenge to systems that be. In what ways do you see Ruth upholding the traditions of the Israelites? In what ways is she challenging them? Would her ethnic
background play a part? What does the word "Redemption" mean in this story?
- Section 2 - 1st Samuel
• Prophets and Kings seems to be the primary struggle here. Should Israel be led by the voice of the Prophets or ruled by the Kings? What has the historical track record been for each? Why are Samuel and Saul different? Do the Israelites act
differently with them? Is God's warning different for than the kings selected in Judges?
- Section 3 - 2nd Samuel
• How do you get from one king to another without a major transition? Show that the second king is continuing the exact same tradition as the first. David is taking over the work of Saul in this book. How does Saul help illustrate the continuation of
tradition? How is David's peaceful taking of the throne different from the past transitions of leadership we have seen?
